Student Advisory Group

The 2026-2027 Student Advisory Group

Fifteen high school students from across the Bay Area will be invited to participate in UCBHSSP's 6th annual Student Advisory Group.

Are you interested in history? Are you interested in the history of the Bay Area and your community? Do you want to learn strategies that will help you take action on issues that are important to you and your community?

This year, the UC Berkeley History-Social Science Project will bring together a diverse cohort of students to take a deep dive into the People's History of the Bay Area. Together, you will produce a project to build awareness or issue a call to action on a topic impacting your community. This project will ensure that student voices directly inform UCBHSSP and educators across the Bay Area and beyond.

In December 2021, the UC Berkeley History-Social Science Project launched its first Student Advisory Group. This diverse cohort of Bay Area high school students researched, wrote about, and shared undertold local histories—[check out their work and the resulting lesson sequences here]. Throughout the program, participants have unique opportunities to talk directly with educators about their experiences. In 2022 and 2024, students presented on panels at the California Council for the Social Studies conference to share insights on civic engagement and local history. They have also met with visiting teachers at UC Berkeley and, most recently, engaged with local educators to explore what it means to make change in San Francisco.

Are you a Bay Area high school student?

Do you want to:

  • Learn about the people's history of the Bay Area?
  • Explore a problem in your community and identify its historical roots?
  • Connect with other Bay Area students who love history?

Apply to Participate!

Students will:

  • Spend the advisory group sessions learning about, researching, and then, using the tools of civic engagement to engage in creating change in your local community
  • Choose what aspect of a local issue that they want to learn more about and how they want to share this issue with the wider community
  • Work collaboratively with high school students from across the Bay Area

Meeting Time: We will meet one Thursday a month from 4-6pm on zoom.

Meeting Dates:  Jan. 14, 2027, Feb. 18, March 18, April 22, May 20, June 10.
