About Us

The UC Berkeley History–Social Science Project collaborates with educators to help students explore the past by connecting it to their own lives, communities, and the world around them. Through evidence-based inquiry, students examine sources, ask questions, and build their own understandings of history, including how different stories support, challenge, or complicate dominant narratives.

As students study the past, they reflect on their identities, perspectives, and ideas about justice and equity. They learn how people throughout history have worked to create a more just society, and they apply their learning to address current issues. These skills and insights empower students to see themselves as active participants in shaping the world they want to live in.

UC Berkeley History-Social Science Project works with K-12 history teachers to strengthen their teaching practices and provide empowering learning opportunities for all students. Our organization:

  • Works collaboratively with teachers, departments and school districts

  • Helps educators develop inclusive social studies curriculum

  • Trains educators to foster equitable and safe environments

We are part of the California History-Social Science Project (CHSSP) network.
