The UCBHSSP believes that all students - especially newcomers - deserve to learn Ethnic Studies. Our team has been developing resources for a High School Ethnic Studies Survey course that can be modified to serve different communities at different fluency levels. If you'd like to learn more about the work we’ve been doing (or contribute to our efforts) please join our virtual information session on September 10th at 4pm.
Learn a structured discourse protocol for controversial topics in which students research and explore the perspectives of different stakeholders while clarifying their own stance. The strategy can be modified based on how ‘hot’ the topic, though at all levels it encourages clarity and self reflection over ‘winning an argument’. The series will include discussion on planning for deliberative discourse and navigating controversy in the classroom.
Sessions will include:
- Protocol for engaging in controversial conversation. - Considerations when choosing appropriate issues for deliberation. - Framing questions to ensure a safe and productive conversation. - A framework guiding adaptations of the protocol for different intensities of controversy - Responding to unplanned controversies
