Planning with the H-SS Framework: Inquiry, Literacy, and Assessment

California's newly adopted History-Social Science Framework encourages four major shifts to planning and instruction: content, inquiry, literacy, and civic engagement. 

UCBHSSP will present a one week planning institute for K-12 teachers who are interested in working individually and in collaborative groups to rethink their approach to history/social studies instruction based on the recommendations included in the H-SS Framework. Workshops and presentations will be informed by the work UCBHSSP has completed with teachers across the Bay Area as they began piloting the H-SS Framework during the 2016-2017 school year.

June 19-June 23, 9am-4pm


  • Evaluate the H-SS Framework and the shifts in planning and instruction it models
  • Draft year-long, unit, and lesson focus questions to drive student inquiry.
  • Develop a lesson incorporating a discrete literacy strategy.
  • Explore multiple forms of assessment, including cumulative assignments that incorporate civic engagement.

 All participants will receive a copy of Access for All Learners, an instructional handbook that includes learning strategies to encourage planning for literacy and disciplinary thinking.
