Mission
The UC Berkeley History-Social Science Project (UCBHSSP) is committed to increasing academic achievement by strengthening history content knowledge, academic literacy, and critical thinking skills of all students. UCBHSSP's work with teachers is informed by current scholarship, engages communities of teachers, and fosters collaboration between K-12 teachers and the university.
The UCBHSSP is a member site of the California History-Social Science Project, one of the California Subject Matter Projects. Our approach provides intensive, discipline-specific professional development programs designed to enhance teacher content knowledge, develop leadership capacity, and expand classroom teaching techniques, thereby improving student learning. Project News... Congratulations to the BOE Teaching American History Grant on the Implementing the Common Core In History Instruction Conference on April 20, 2013. Goals
-
Develop strategies that teachers can use to help students "act as historians";

Provide content lectures by university professors to enhance teacher content knowledge;

Promote academic literacy, particularly among English Learners and low level literacy students, through reading and writing strategies for history-social science;

Incorporate the History-Social Science Content Standards and California Common Core State Standards into classroom practice;
-
Establish a network of teacher leaders by providing support and space for ongoing professional discourse among educators.
