FAIR Act Workshop at SCCOE

Join other Bay Area teachers in this workshop sponsored by the Santa Clara COE in partnership with the UC Berkeley History-Social Science Project to start implementing the FAIR Act, with an emphasis on the Framework’s encouragement of inquiry and student engagement.  

Ethnic Studies and the H-SS Classroom

This institute is funded by the Teaching with Primary Sources program of the Library of Congress. Teachers will be introduced to Ethnic Studies pedagogies and will develop a lesson utilizing primary sources from the Library of Congress and critically engaging around questions of what is included in the archive.

What is the role of the textbook?

Participate in a learning session about what to consider when adopting H-SS textbooks.

Teaching Historical Thinking: A Summer Institute

Join UCBHSSP and Bay Area educators for this one week institute to explore how we can increase student connection to the historical narrative, the history of their communities, and themselves through a focus on project-based learning and historical thinking concepts.

Global History Series

This 3-day symposium will explore the utility of using games and game-creation to teach historical concepts and thinking skills. A different type of game will be discussed on each day of the symposium. While the content will be grade level specific, the learning strategies will be applicable across grade levels. Participants will leave with new games and a process to engage students in their own game-creation. Teachers are encouraged to register for more than one day.

Summer Institutes Fall Follow-up

Join UCBHSSP for its annual fall follow up! This follow up session to our 2017 summer institutes is open to all Bay Area teachers. Seventh grade teachers, in particular, are encouraged to attend.

The day will begin with a talk from young adult author Pamela Turner, who will discuss Samurai Rising:The Epic Life of Minamoto Yoshitsune. Teachers who attended our summer institutes will bring student work to share.
