Summer Institutes Fall Follow-up

Join UCBHSSP for its annual fall follow up! This follow up session to our 2017 summer institutes is open to all Bay Area teachers. Seventh grade teachers, in particular, are encouraged to attend.

The day will begin with a talk from young adult author Pamela Turner, who will discuss Samurai Rising:The Epic Life of Minamoto Yoshitsune. Teachers who attended our summer institutes will bring student work to share. 

Using Children's Books to Teach History

Join children's book author Laura Atkins, co-author of Fred Korematsu Speaks Up, to learn more about the children's book industry and how to access diverse, justice-oriented texts for your classrooms. UCBHSSP teacher leader Jennifer Brouhard will share lessons she developed to support use of Fred Korematsu Speaks Up.

Implementing the CA History-Social Science Framework

The UC Berkeley History-Social Science Project (UCBHSSP) will introduce participants to the new History-Social Science framework, which was adopted in July 2016. A central aspect of both efforts is to support teachers in developing inquiry-driven courses that integrate the H-SS Standards (content and historical analysis) and Common Core Standards for Literacy in History while integrating ELD instructional models.

Remembering WWI: Exploring NARA's Digital Archive with Historypin

In this centennial year of remembering WWI, join UCBHSSP and Historypin to explore digitized resources available through the National Archives, assemble source sets using the Historypin-designed app, and draft instructional supports based on UCBHSSP's H-SS Framework-aligned learning strategies.

UCBHSSP at the National Council for the Social Studies Conference
